How to Choose Golf Clubs

2022-01-13

IF A WORKER WANTS TO DO A GOOD JOB, HE MUST FIRST SHARPEN HIS TOOLS

1. Introduction

How to choose the most suitable set of golf clubs for golf beginners? Most people think that with an expensive set of clubs, you can have a good game. The result; not only wasted money, but the game failed to improve. Therefore, in order to buy a suitable set of clubs, in addition to knowing your own sports conditions, you must also understand the design and characteristics of each type of clubs. Let's discuss the characteristics of the clubs one by one:

2. Club name and flying distance

Golf clubs are mainly divided into two types: "woods and irons". The main purpose of the wood is to hit the ball at a long distance, the main purpose of the iron is to get close to the target; the other is to putt accurately. In general, the rules of the game, a set of clubs does not have more than fourteen clubs as the principle. Each club is different in length, face, and lie angle. The smaller the number of the club, the longer the length, the smaller the loft angle, the lower the fly ball trajectory, and the larger the swing trajectory, so it can hit the ball farther.

Wood number generally choose #1, #3, #5 three woods. The iron selections are #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #8, #9; there are also two special clubs, the pitching wedge (PW) and the pit wedge S. The length of the club is designed with a driver as the main driver. Every time the club increases, the length is reduced by half an inch and the elevation angle is increased by 4 degrees.

Each golf club has its own name and has a different flight distance design when hitting the ball, as shown in the table:

Table 1: Golf club name and flight distance table

Club Name Flight distance (yards) Elevation (degrees)
Wooden pole 1 Wood ( Driver ) 220 or more 8~13
2 Wood ( Brassie ) 210-230 13~15
3 Wood ( Spoon ) 190-220 15~17
4 Wood ( Baffy ) 180-210 17~19
5 Wood ( Cleek ) 170-190 19~22

3. Rod shaft hardness

An important parameter in golf club selection is shaft hardness. The individual's arm strength and the speed of turning waist are closely related to the choice of "bar axis".

Generally, strong and powerful hitters should choose a club with a harder shaft; those with less swing strength, older age, and less smooth waist rotation should choose a club with a softer shaft.

In principle; the softer the club, the higher the ball trajectory. Too hard clubs are easy for hitters to hit a slice, too soft clubs are easy for hitters to hit a hook.

Model Hardness User
Hardest Professional players for strong play
Slightly hard Suitable for professional players or strong players
Hard Suitable for ordinary men
Slightly soft Suitable for weak men or strong women
Soft Suitable for average women or older men

4. The height of the center of gravity of the club head

The center of gravity of the clubhead has an absolute relationship with the flight trajectory and distance. A club with a high center of gravity, the bottom of the head is thinner, and the ball has a lower trajectory after hitting the ball, and the flight distance will be slightly longer. The ball head with high and narrow center of gravity is more suitable for intermediate and advanced players.

For beginners, it is best to choose a lower center of gravity of the ball head first, the club is better for the downswing, and it is not easy to make mistakes, and the direction of the ball flight and the ability to control the ball are also better. The heavier the club head, the lower the center of gravity, and the higher the ballistic you hit. Of course, the distance will be closer. Therefore: Beginners should first focus on the stability of the flying ball direction before considering increasing the flying ball distance.

5. The sweetness of the club head is wide and narrow

The sweetness of the club head is wide and narrow, which determines the hit rate and distance loss rate. The narrower the head sweetness, the lower the fairway. It is best for beginners to choose a club with a wider sweetness and a lower center of gravity; this will reduce the distance error rate and the shot error rate.

6. The thickness of the bottom surface of the club head

The thickness of the bottom surface of the club head determines the height of the center of gravity of the club head. The thinner the bottom design of the club head, the higher the center of gravity and the lower the ball trajectory, which is suitable for middle and high-level hitters. For beginners, it is better to choose a lower center of gravity of the club head.

7. The included angle of the club head (the angle between the bottom of the club head and the center line of the shaft)

The included angle of the club head refers to the inclination angle between the bottom plate of the club head and the shaft when the bottom of the club touches the ground.

The inclination angle of the club head is in the selection of the club, and the height is the main factor (the distance from the wrist to the ground). It is appropriate to choose a high angle for tall people. Otherwise, the root of the club will easily go up, and the sweet area of the club head will be reduced, which is easy to cause distance loss and hit rate. Ball turnover rate. It is better for short people to choose a low loft angle, otherwise the club end will not be easy to go up, the sweet spot of the club head will be reduced, and the distance loss and shot error rate will also increase. The direction of the ball's flight will also be biased.

When choosing a club, place the bottom of the club head flat on the ground, let the angle of the bottom of the shaft extend naturally, and then choose a set of clubs that best suits you according to your height and arm length.

8. Loft angle (elevation angle) size (ball head angle)

The larger the loft angle, the higher the ball trajectory, the harder the ball rolls, and the shorter the flight distance; the smaller the loft angle, the lower the ball trajectory, and the longer the ball flies. The loft angles are all different. Take the No. 1 driver as an example: the general design angle is 8 degrees to 13 degrees, and beginners should choose 11 degrees to 13 degrees, and the larger the loft angle is, the better.

9. Club front and ball back

The distance between the front edge of the club and the front edge of the shaft is called (HOSLE OFFSET). ) The lower the ball trajectory, the longer the ball flies. The larger the number of clubs (HOSLE OFFSET), the smaller the general (HOSLE OFFSET) design is as follows:

Name HOSLE OFFSET OFFSET spacing size (inch)
(9 iron) NO OFFSET 0”
(7 iron) MINIMAL OFFSET 0”-1/8”
(5 iron) MODERATE OFFSET 1/8”-1/4”
(3 iron) EXCESSIVE OVER 1/4”

10. Socket tightness

Poor fit of the socket will cause looseness, which is more likely to cause the club to break. Poor Socket fit will also damage the appearance of the club.

11. Club length

The design length of the club is based on the driver, generally no more than 44 inches. For each additional club, the length of the club is reduced by half an inch, and so on. Generally speaking, the height is 169 cm-174 cm. The height of the wooden pole is 43 inches, which can be increased or decreased by 1/2 inch, but the principle is not more than 1 inch. Petite women may consider reducing by 1 inch.

12. Grip size

The diameter from the top of the grip is called the grip size. The grip size is too large, and the fingers cannot reach the palm; the grip size is too small, and the fingers penetrate into the palm. Hence the grip size; too large or too small, will create an uncomfortable grip and will not be able to fully grip the bar effectively.

13. Swing balance (swing weight) Swing weight

13.1 Significance and Importance of Swing Weight

Golf weight is divided into total club weight and club weight that you feel when you swing. An important factor in golf club selection is swing weight, commonly known as swing balance. That is to say; if the weight of the swing is closer to the grip position, the swing will be lighter, and you can swing with less force, but for strong hitters, you will not be able to hit long-distance balls.

If the center of gravity is closer to the club head, the swing will become heavier. After the swing, the club head is light or heavy, and whether the swing is balanced or not is closely related to the degree of swing balance. In the end, which stage should be selected with better balance, generally men should choose the stage around D0; women should choose the stage around C7.

The best way is to try the swing yourself, feel the most comfortable, the smoothest swing, is the most suitable club. If your optimal swing weight is D0, misusing a heavier or lighter weight will cause you to overexert or fail to take advantage of it.

13.2 Measurement of swing weight (measurement of swing balance)

The balance of the swing is expressed by the ratio of the weight of the club head to the weight of the grip: take the 12-inch grip end of the shaft as the center fulcrum, and add 20 ounces of weight to the top to make the club level, so called The swing balance is D0. If you add fifteen ounces of weight to the top to make the club level, it is called swing balance D1. And so on. Beginners can choose the club that suits them according to their gender, age and physical condition:

14. The size of the torsion angle of the club head

In the swing action, the angle of rotation of the club itself due to the weight of the ball head is called the torsion angle.

In general, the stronger the hitter with the faster the swing speed, the stronger the torque resistance and the smaller the torsion angle. Weak hitters don't actually need a club with strong torque resistance, but the stronger the torque resistance, the more helpful the hitter is, and the cost of the shaft is relatively increased.

How to strike a balance between the two is up to the striker to decide.

15. Conclusion

Beginners learn how to choose a suitable set of golf clubs. Each club is different in design, length, face, and elevation, and each brand has different design angles. At the beginning, a beginner should consider his own economic situation to buy clubs. Sometimes clubs that are too expensive are not necessarily suitable for beginners.

The prerequisites for buying a club; of course, it looks good, feels good, and is comfortable to swing. Then; the shaft hardness is determined according to the individual's own arm and waist strength conditions. Determine the length of the shaft according to their height; then choose the height of the center of gravity of the club face and the width of the sweet spot area of the club face according to the beginner or advanced level. Individual sporting conditions, age, and gender determine the balance of the shaft.

After considering the above factors; the most important factor is the price? ! How to buy a set of affordable and easy-to-use clubs; in addition to listening, seeing, and asking more, you must also really understand your own conditions and understand the characteristics of the clubs. When buying a club for the first time, you may wish to analyze and discuss with the coach when choosing a club. I believe that the club you choose is the best and most suitable club at this stage.
